Tintype of Smoking Man

Vanishing Species
Tintype of a man smoking

This is a strong photograph, proof that the tintype, even with its limited tonal scale can deliver an image with punch.  The scan does not quite do this image justice.

The tintype is 1 3/4 inches in diameter, a button size, in a gilt metal mount.

Button-style images were often taken by itinerant, or street photographers.  If you have an interest in the cameras used by itinerant photographers, two street cameras are featured on this site.  They are a Chicago Ferrotype Company Mandelette Postcard Camera and an Itinerant Photographer's Candid Camera. A box of Chicago Ferrotype Company photo buttons can be found on the Photo Buttons page.
